Canada Gets Coast-to-Coast Local Calling

Canadian users, be happy!

We’ve been quietly making some major changes to RF.com’s back end. One important change is support for multiple Points of Presence (POP) within countries where RF.com is available. In short, a POP is the “local” number your mobile phone rings when you make a call with the RF dialer.

Since we added Canada, we learned (and a bit red-faced learned a bit too late) that Canadian cell phone carriers don’t support nation-wide local calling. This presented a problem with our service. RF.com users in Vancouver, for example, had to pay hefty tolls to their cell phone carrier to make RF.com calls through our POP in Toronto.

That just wasn’t working for many in Canada, and we promised to fix it. Unfortunately, the fix required significant and time-consuming code changes on the RF.com media server. Fortunately, those changes are now fully implemented and, among many other improvements we’ll outline in a post here soon, it is now possible for Canadian users to select one of seven local POPs (Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver) to route their RF.com calls through.

It’s up to you to choose the local POP that is best for you.

If you are already registered with RF.com: Click on the RF Dialer “Settings” tab. Tap on “Phones,” and tap on your phone number to edit it. Under “Country” modify it so it uses “Canada” and in parenthesis, the city closest to your area code, i.e.: “Canada (Toronto).”

If you are signing up with RF.com for the first time: simply choose the city closest to you when selecting your country.

This will allow most Canadians to make calls through a local POP and use RF.com without enduring long distance charges.

Go nuts!

Great service! Thank you for providing this. Will you be adding any more POPs in Canada? For example Hamilton, Ontario area?

    Thanks ……. JD

I registered my iphone on Rogers Toronto and tried to make a Long Distance call…The voice mail from Rogers indicated that it was going to make a LD call. Is this how RF should act? Need to know before I go nuts and call everyone and then get a LD Bill…:)

  8. Tamim Says:

Tried to re-register again and I have activated RF with Toronto Rogers…When trying to call LD the message goes through the Rogers customer service which tries to make a LD call. I assumed that it would use Toronto POP and make the call.

Have used RF for many month on the rogers network in Toronto. Since a couple of weeks the access number seems to be blocked by Rogers. Anyone else experienced the same problem in the Toronto area?

    Marc,

    Are you still having problems?
